Nellie Ada was born at Smethwick on 19th September 1883, at 102 Oldbury Road where her parents Arthur William and Elizabeth were living with Elizabeth’s mother Eliza and siblings Thomas (16) and Louisa (14); her birth was registered at King’s Norton. She was baptised on 18th October 1883, in Smethwick. At this time Arthur was working as a labourer at a railway station.

By 1891, Nellie is 7 and the family has moved to 26 Oxford Street, Pleck, Walsall. She is living there with her parents and three siblings – Arthur (9), Lillie (5) and Tom (1) – plus a lodger Eliza (26). Her father is now working as a general labourer.

By the time of the census in 1901, Nellie is now 17 and has moved out of the family home – she is working as a live-in domestic housemaid for James Bird and his young family just a few streets away at 226 Wednesbury Road, Pleck. He is a self-employed greengrocer working ‘at home’ in a corner shop.

Nellie died of tuberculosis back in the family home at 12 Oxford Street, Pleck, Walsall on 18th May 1906.
