Urina Ann Baynham (1854-1937)
Born: 1854 at West Bromwich
Parents: Jeremiah Baynham and Caroline Evans
Died: 1937 at Brisbane, Australia
Urina Ann was born at West Bromwich, Staffordshire in 1854.
She married Jesse Andrews in Australia and had two children: Agnes in 1895 and Charlotte Jessie in 1896. Jesse died in 1926.
Urina died in Queensland, Australia in 1937, aged 82.
Urina Ann was born in Newhall Street, West Bromwich on 20th November 1854 and was baptised, together with her younger brother Arthur William, at Christ Church, West Bromwich on 13th July 1856.
By 1861 she was 6 years old and living at 76 Union Street with her parents Jeremiah and Caroline, elder sister Louisa (7) and younger siblings Arthur William (5), George (4) and Agnes (8 months); also living with them was her great-uncle William Simmonds from Upton Bishop.
Another four brothers were born soon after: Andrew in 1862 (died 1863); John in 1864 (died 1865); Albert in 1868 and Thomas in 1870.
During this period Urina left home. By the time of the 1871 census she was working, aged 16, as a live-in general servant (domestic) at a school for girls at Barton In The Beans, Leicestershire – and she was calling herself Ann Baynham.
Two more brothers were born in the 1870s – Peter in 1874 and Amos Joseph in 1876, but in that same year her sister Louisa Mary died, unmarried and aged just 23.
In 1878, aged 23, presumably prior to (and as a prerequisite for?) starting her next employment, she was ‘conditionally baptised’ at Cowley St. John’s church on 22nd June 1878 as ‘Urania Anne Mary Baynham’.
So in the 1881 census she was recorded, aged 26, working as a live-in general domestic servant at a “middle class school for girls” at 26-28 Iffley Road, Oxford where the governess, two annuitants and 5 teenage girls also lived in; this appears to have been Cowley St John’s Middle Class Girls School in Marston Street (off Iffley Road).
In late 1885, travelling as ‘Annie Baynham’ (28) she emigrated to Australia, leaving Plymouth on 15th October 1885 on a free passage aboard the steamship R. M. S. Compta.
She travelled on the same ship on which her newly-wed younger sister Agnes and husband William Lloyd had emigrated in 1882.
In Brisbane she married Jesse Andrews; he had been born in 1848 in Croydon, Surrey and had emigrated to Australia in 1873 aboard ‘Royal Dane’. Their first child Agnes was born in 1895 and their second child Charlotte Jessie was born in 1896.
Jesse died on 5th July 1926, in Brisbane.
Urina died in Brisbane on 1st August 1937, aged 83, and was buried in Toowong Cemetery.
