A Baynham Family History

Introduction

The aim of this website is to trace and record the history of my Midlands branch of the Baynham family back to the well-established genealogy of the Baynhams of The Forest of Dean and, beyond them, to the Kings of Wales.

The focus will be on three main characters: my eleven times great-grandfather Thomas Baynham of Clearwell (1422-1500), the head of the family living in The Forest of Dean at the end of the Middle Ages; my great-great grandfather Jeremiah Baynham (1829-1900) the link person who moved with his young family from The Forest to the industrial Midlands; and my grandfather Marshall William Baynham (1897-1963) who fought in the First World War.

Others will play their parts in these unfolding stories – including a knight who accompanied King Henry VIII to the Field of Cloth of Gold; a Protestant martyr burned at the stake for his religious beliefs; and the captain of  the notorious Damned Crew who became involved in The Gunpowder Plot.

Also, it is a work in progress – starting with the framework of my family tree plus notes on people and places and an explanation of how it all came about.
