Thomas Baynham (1719- )
Born: 1719 at Newland Hamlet in Herefordshire
Parents: John Baynham and Sarah Daugh
Married: 1745 to Mary Jenkins and 1756 to Hester Wellington
Died:
Thomas, my five times great-grandfather, was born in 1719 at Newland Hamlet in Herefordshire.
He married Mary Jenkins, daughter of John Jenkins and Margaret Bonner, at Brampton Abbotts in 1745, when he was 26 and she was 21. They had six children: Thomas in 1747; Mary in 1748; John in 1749; Bevis in 1751; Elisabeth, my four times great-grandmother, in 1752; Alice in 1754. Mary Jenkins died in 1754.
He next married Hester Wellington, daughter of Thomas Wellington and Ann Wood at Lea in 1756, when he was 37 and she was 29. They had six children: Nancy in 1756; Thomas in 1757: John in 1759; Hester in 1760; William in 1765; and George in 1767.
Thomas, my five times great-grandfather, was born in 1719 in Herefordshire at Newland Hamlet, also known as the Hamlet(t) of Newland. Newland was a small village on the edge of Lea Bailey, a short walk from Hope Mansell.
He was baptised at Hope Mansell in the church of St Michael and All Angels on 28th March 1719.
He married Mary Jenkins in the church of St. Michael and All Angels, Brampton Abbotts, on 1st December 1745.

Mary had been born at Ross in Herefordshire in 1724, the daughter of John Jenkins and Margaret Bonner. She was baptised at Ross on Wye on 16th March.
With her he had six children:
Thomas, baptised on 5th April 1747 at Brampton Abbotts, in the church of St. Michael and All Angels.
John, baptised on 25th June 1749 at Brampton Abbotts, in the church of St. Michael and All Angels.
Mary, baptised on 4th February 1750 at Aston Ingham, in the church of St. John the Baptist.
Bevis, baptised on 13th October 1751 at Brampton Abbotts, in the church of St. Michael and All Angels.
Elisabeth, my four times great-grandmother, baptised on 30th January 1752 at Aston Ingham, in the church of St. John the Baptist.
Mary, baptised on 10th February 1754 at Brampton Abbotts, in the church of St. Michael and All Angels.
Alice, baptised on 26th August 1754 at Aston Ingham, in the church of St. John the Baptist. An annotation on the register shows 4th August, possibly her birth date; it appears that Alice was born prematurely.
Alice died the same year and was buried (‘an infant’) together with her mother Mary at Aston Ingham on 11th October 1754. Perhaps Mary died of complications arising from the birth of Alice.
On 13th January 1756 Thomas entered into a Marriage Licence Allegation, sworn before a John Wicks, for a Licence to marry Hester Wellington at the Lea.
On the same day he also entered into a Marriage Bond, sworn before a John White, for £500 jointly with a Robert Longden.
Thomas was described in both as a yeoman and widower aged 30, of Aston Ingham.
Hester was a spinster aged 25, of the Lea.

A week later Thomas married Hester Wellington in the church of St. John the Baptist at the Lea, on 19th January 1756.

Hester had been born at the Lea in Herefordshire in 1727, the fourth daughter of Thomas Wellington and Ann Wood. She was baptised ‘Esther’ on 16th May at the church of St. John the Baptist.
Thomas and Hester had six children; all of them were baptised at Aston Ingham, in the church of St. John the Baptist:
Nancy was baptised on 29th September 1756.
Thomas was born in 1757 and baptised on 9th January 1758.
A daughter named Hester was baptised on 27th December 1760.
Her son John was baptised in St. David’s church at Little Dewchurch on 16th January 1774 and the following month on 13th February at the same church she married John Mulleroygale (presumably the father of her child).
The Gloucester Journal for 3rd September 1764 carried a Notice to all Persons not to employ a certain Richard Woodward (27) as he was a covenant servant but had absconded from his master Thomas Baynham of Aston Ingham on Sunday 26th August.
It seems likely that the master is this Thomas Baynham, living in Aston Ingham; the servant is possibly the Richard Woodward from Upton Bishop, baptised there on 2nd September 1733.
Their fifth child William was baptised on 9th June 1765,
but he died the following year and was buried on 14th February 1766.
Their youngest child George was baptised on 8th April 1767.
Hester, wife of Thomas, died in 1779 aged 52; she was buried on 7th May as ‘Esther, the wife of Thomas Baynham’ at Lea, in the church of St. John the Baptist where she had been baptised and had married Thomas.
