Thomas Baynham ('The Blacksmith') (1639-1694)
Born: 1639
Parents: Thomas Baynham (‘The Wire Drawer’) and Mary
Married: 1666 to Joane Trapin
Died: 1694
Thomas, my seven times great-grandfather, was born in 1639.
He married Joane Trapin in December 1666 at the church of St. Michael and All Angels in Brampton Abbotts, Herefordshire when they were both about 27. They had seven children: Jane in 1667; Sarah in 1668; Alice in 1672; Hannah in 1675; Joan in 1676; John, my six times great-grandfather, in 1679; Stephen in 1690.
Thomas died in 1694, aged 55.
Joane died in 1700, aged about 61.
My seven times great-grandfather Thomas was baptised at the church of St. Nicholas in Gloucester on 25th August 1639.
Banns for his marriage to Joane Trapin were read on 4th, 11th and 18th December 1666 in the church of St. Michael and All Angels at Brampton Abbotts, Herefordshire.
The couple, recorded as ‘Thomas Bainham & Joane Trapping’, were married on 22nd December 1666, when he was 27.
He was a blacksmith, as evidenced by the later burial record of his wife as ‘Joane Baynam ye widow of Thomas Baynham Blacksmith’.
Together they had seven children, all of whom were baptised in the church of St. Michael and All Angels at Brampton Abbotts:
Jane, baptised on 19th October 1667.
Sarah, baptised on 14th March 1668.
Thomas was a churchwarden in 1668 and signed the Bishop’s Transcript.
Thomas, baptised on 14th March 1669.
Thomas signed the Brampton Abbotts Bishop’s Transcript for 1669.
Mary, baptised on 18th November 1671.
Again Thomas signed the Transcript as churchwarden in 1671.
Alice, baptised on 23rd April 1672.
She died young and was buried in the family church on 27th October 1674.
Hannah, baptised on 10th April 1675.
Alas, she died in her birth year and was buried (as ‘Hanna Bainam’) on 4th June.
Joan, baptised on 27th February 1676. She later married John Clark, on 29th October 1706; they had at least one child, John (1710-1766).
In 1678 Thomas was again signing Transcripts as churchwarden of the family church St. Michael and All Angels at Brampton Abbotts.
This registry entry records the burial of two Bainhams – Jonas, son of Alice on 27th August and another Thomas on 10th September.
John, my six times great-grandfather, baptised on 11th October 1679.
Stephen, baptised on 6th April 1690. Recorded later as ‘Stephanus Baynham’ he married Maria Howells on 7th February 1713, at Hentland in Herefordshire – presumably at the church of St. Dubricius.
Thomas died in 1694, aged 55.
He was buried at St. Michael’s church, on 24th February.
His wife Joane died in 1700, aged 61.
She too was buried at St. Michael’s church, on 16th September.
