Tree, v.3 - the issue of John and Sarah (nee Woodward)
This family tree shows the lastest version of my Baynham pedigree (version 3, January 2026).
The previous iteration (version 2 – ‘Thomas, son of Thomas, son of Thomas’) explained how, having come to the conclusion that I was descended from Sir Thomas Baynham of Clearwell’s youngest son Sir Christopher Baynham and his ‘Clearwell’ side of the family (and not from Thomas’ eldest son Sir Alexander (1459-1524) and his ‘Westbury’ side), I set about re-tracing my ancestry from Sir Christopher’s son Thomas of Noxon Park through his son Thomas the Wire Drawer.
However, in 2025 I became concerned about some of the information in my tree which was derived from other published trees but which had no obvious source. So I began the process of systematically removing from my tree any ‘facts’ not supported by written evidence or confirmed sources.
Other trees which include James Baynham (c.1779-1860) show him as the son of John Baynham (1759-1792) and Sarah Woodward ( -1796), but there does not appear to be any evidence at all for this. I have made exhaustive searches, including in the database of parish records maintained by The Forest of Dean Family History Trust.
John was the third child of Thomas Baynham (1719- ) and his second wife Hester Wellington (1727-1779) and had an older step-sister Elisabeth (1752- ) who was the daughter of Thomas and his first wife Mary Jenkins (1724-1754).
In 1779 Elisabeth Baynham appears as the unmarried mother of a son James in the register of baptisms at Ross and I think that she is a good fit for my tree, which I have revised again below –
